CHROMIUM 6
Is Chromium-6 In Your Tap Water?
What is chromium 6? Recent studies show that Chromium 6, or hexavalent chromium, is probably carcinogenic - a cancer causing agent. A new health risk assessment being performed by the EPA due out in 2011 will determine if lower levels of chromium (the total amount including Chromium 6) should be the new standard for drinking water. Not all chromium is harmful. Chromium 3 (trivalent), for example, is good for humans and is found naturally in meats, grains, fruits and vegetables. An element found in the periodic table, chromium is found in many plants, animals, soil and rocks.
Chromium 6, on the other hand, is not so natural. It can be formed by the erosion of natural deposits but it is mainly a waste product discharged by steel mills and paper mills - waste that washes into city water sheds and can settle into ground water. Eventually, it ends up in the water that pours from your kitchen and bathroom faucets - odorless and tasteless. How much Chromium (total) is allowed to remain in drinking water after all the filtering and preparation by the city? The current standard is 100 ppb (parts per billion) or 0.1 milligrams per liter but remember, the EPA will release the results of it's study on the carcinogenity of Chromium 6 this year so the standard could change. It is important to note that States may set standards for Chromium levels that are much stricter than that of the EPA.
