Why Piedmont Triad Well Water Can Carry Arsenic

The geology beneath the North Carolina Piedmont includes a formation known as the Carolina Slate Belt, or Carolina terrane. As the rock in this formation weathers over time, arsenic is naturally released into the groundwater that private wells draw from. Research on private wells has found elevated arsenic concentrations across several Piedmont counties, and Guilford County falls within that affected region.

Private wells aren’t regulated or monitored by the EPA. That responsibility falls entirely to the well owner, which means testing is the only way to know what’s actually coming out of your tap.

Health Risks & Why Testing Is the Only Way to Know

Long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water, even at low concentrations, has been linked to increased risk of certain cancers, skin lesions, and cardiovascular and developmental health concerns.
